Charter School
Trego School is working on an application to open a charter school within the Trego School District. The charter school would serve grades 7-12, and would use the open school model.
Describe the instructional design:
Classes will be both multi-grade and interdisciplinary. Class sizes will be no larger than ten students per class. The teaching approach favored will be that of “guide on the side”, where the teacher acts largely as a facilitator. Classes will be longer and typically occur on alternating days.
Classes will typically be in-person, however self-study classes can occur with minimal in-person attendance. Similarly, vocational classes that involve touring job sites, internships and job-shadowing will occur primarily off campus.
Classes will take multiple forms: Self-Study, Teacher Led, and Student Led
In a Self-Study class, students will collaborate with their academic advisor in order to develop a plan of study, determine which standards the student will address, and how proficiency will be evaluated. The academic advisor and student will meet regularly to evaluate progress.
In Teacher Led classes, the teacher will be responsible for providing the students with a course outline, and rubrics for the projects they will complete to prove proficiency. The teacher will choose what curriculum students are exposed to and act as a guide through the class.
In Student Led classes, one student will take a leadership role. They will collaborate with the assigned teacher to select the standards the class will teach, determine the means of evaluation, and select the curriculum. While the leading student will take the lead, acting as a guide to their fellow learners, the teacher will always be present to help and facilitate the learning and teaching process.
Historical PLaySpace
Trego School is seeking a grant that will enable us to build miniature, outdoor representations of parts of Trego History, such as buildings from logging camps. This little outdoor museum will double as a playspace for students.
School Community Library
At the school board meeting on September 30th, the board approved an interlocal agreement, to be proposed to the county commissioners, which would open up the school library as a branch of the Lincoln County Library.
What would the hours of operation be? While the specific hours have not yet been determined, the goal is to be open to the public for at least 30 hours a week.
Is it safe to have the public in the school? The school has a bit of remodeling to do in order to ensure that the community can be served without compromising the security of the school. Specifically, the school will be adding a receptionist window and replacing a set of interior doors, in order to isolate the library from the classrooms.
